Our founders (Tim & Jeff) had a very similar backgrounds of study and both belonged to the same organization and studied the same classical heritage arts during much of their martial arts career. In 2014 they resigned their past martial arts positions and collectively founded the Yama Nami Bujutsu Kai (Mountain Wave Martial Arts Association) and the Yamanami-ryu (Mountain Wave Style) martial arts system.
While always indebted to those who passed on so much of their knowledge Tim and Jeff were pulled to move in a different direction as it was felt that many of the traditional martial arts methods while highly effective in terms of technical ability were being taught in a manner that created roadblocks for some students.
The concept of Yamanami-ryu Sogo Bujutsu was born out of need. Tim and Jeff both have a deep passion and appreciation for the traditional methods of martial arts, however too many times the traditions get in the way of effective learning. The creation of Yamanami-ryu is a means to maintain the traditional aspects of the heritage arts while pursuing what all the founders of the various heritage arts sought, relevant and practical self-defense through the personal pursuit of self-improvement.
While listed below are many of our direct martial arts teachers there are many more who have spoken into our hearts and have helped lead to the formation of the Yamanami-ryu. Patrick McCarthy Hanshi, Nick DePaolo Sensei, Jason Sorgi Sensei, Robert Young Sensei and many others, we are eternally grateful for your support past, present and future.
